A pair of Siamese twin girls have been separated by a team at Great Ormond Street Hospital, it emerged today. The conjoined twins, who are now doing well in intensive care, were born joined mid-chest to mid-abdomen and their livers were fused. A surgical team led by Professor Lewis Spitz and Edward Kiely performed a four-and-a-half hour operation to separate the girls and divide the livers between them. "While it is early days, a good outcome for both children is likely," said Prof Spitz. The operation used two theatres, involved four surgeons, four anaesthetists, one anaesthetic nurse, one operating department assistant and six other theatre nurses. The girls' parents, who wish to remain anonymous, said: "We are grateful for the care that Great Ormond Street has given our children - we would also like to thank the hospital where the twins were born, where we also had good care. "We are looking forward to taking the girls home." Conjoined twins occur when a single fertilised egg splits, to form twins, but the separation is incomplete. Conjoined twins are extremely rare - incidence may be as low as one in every 200,000 live births.
