Priyanka A. Roy | Published 13.08.22, 02:14 AM AYUSHMAN MITRA For me, it is the art of embroidery. It is a collaboration between an artist and the karigar. I mostly paint in 2D and then to see it transform into 3D and be able to touch and feel different textures... sometimes you also give your karigars the freedom to explore with your own designs, and being from such varied backgrounds, this communication between the artist and the karigars gives me the freedom and great amount of joy to explore and do a lot of things. ABHISHEK DUTTA Handwoven fabrics always give me that kind of freedom. In our Independence, khadi also played an important role. I have been using handwoven since the beginning of my journey in fashion. Though I do westernwear, I stick to my roots with the kind of fabrics I use. It always gave me that rooted feeling to design something. The look and feel might be very modern and chic, but at the end of the day it is Indian handwoven fabrics. That also gives me the freedom to express my creativity. RIMI NAYAK For me, my work has always been an extended version folk art of bengal

The most beautiful accessories possible. In leather, we use ethical leather. I think it is one of the most beautiful materials. Not just footwear, we also do belts for clients matching with their shoes, little handbags, keychains. Its durability is an added advantage. Embroidery gives me the freedom to put my thoughts into form. The freedom of using embroidery on everything is crazy. Also, the biggest freedom that I get in my work is from my karigars and team members. Whatever I think, they give a tangible form to it with the designs. They give me the freedom to do whatever I want in my work. ESHAANI JAYASWAL I use applique to create silhouettes. It can be used in different techniques  because the concept of applique is patchwork. We started with a 2D concept and over a period of time explored texturing with the patches and moved on to 3D applique using different techniques and playing with fabrics to create different motifs. So, the way it looks has also changed over the years. Working with different materials to create different textures then patching it together through different techniques made our work evolve over time and the silhouette looks different gold bengal design with price

it sold like hot cakes. For me, creating that style was a huge expression of my design aesthetics and it gave me the freedom to break away from the traditional blouse designs. The palette is dominated by ivory, greys, beige, cream, pista green, sea blue, and taupe. For furnishings and upholstery we chose linens and cottons; while the carpentry sees neutral paint shades with some brass-and-cane elements. We used a lot of wallpapers to be able to transport the clients to another space and time,” she adds. Also latest bangles designs

HarperCollins' decision to collaborate with DhakaYeah becomes easy to understand. The platform became popular on social media in 2017 when they began painting nostalgic scenes of old and present-day Dhaka with all its cultural icons: scenes in Sadarghat, the Buriganga river, Dhaka in the rain or during Ramadan. In 2021, DhakaYeah won the People's Choice Award at the Lahore Digital Festival for their artwork "The Break", in which a woman rests gazing at the Tara Masjid located in Armanitola.  "The theme for this year's festival is POST REALITY", the illustrators had shared upon winning the award, "Our understanding of what is real has shifted so much that we are uncertain about what is the actual reality – be it the living world around us or the addictive augmented reality that we are observing through our digital screens." HarperCollins commissioned the book cover from DhakaYeah last year. "DhakaYeah would like to thank the incredible team at HarperCollins who managed to complete the entire project over a few emails without a single phone call", they have shared.  Author Debarati Mukhopadhyay is a bestselling author of contemporary Bangla literature and won the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Pursakar in 2021. Strand Road surrounding the Armenian Ghat. The Port Trust is the custodian and conservator of the river, including its banks, while the KMDA decides the development along the banks. A third agency, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), is in charge of managing approach roads, waste management and approving building plans of houses near the river, including the ghats. But what is the ground reality of the ghats? Over a fortnight, I undertook several rides on ferries that crisscross the Hooghly every day, carrying thousands of commuters. Some three decades ago I would do this very often. I still remember the mostly green shoreline dotted with colonial-style pavilions and exquisite cast-iron structures. Alas, most of that has vanished. Instead, I saw shanties, piles of garbage and unsightly apartment blocks. Some ghats were covered with corrugated iron sheets painted white and blue.   To get a closer look, I decided to walk along the riverfront of the more architecturally significant ghats, most of them in the vicinity of the Howrah Bridge. It is quite difficult to negotiate them, as I discovered. A ramshackle bridge over the circular railway track that runs along the riverside lay in my path. I had to pick my.

are saddened by thepresent condition of these edifices thatare the flag-bearers of our history andheritage. We feel it is our responsibilityto preserve it in our own way.” Poulomee adds, “With the passageof time, these splendid structures started losing their glory due to the lack ofconservation and restoration. The oncebeautiful riverbank has now become adump, stinking and filthy.” While researching for the documentary it took five years Atreyee and Poulomee foundmost of the ghats in varying stages ofdecay. When they compared the currentcondition of Chhotulal Ghat to thesouth of Howrah Bridge with a 1912photograph of it, which they found inthe collection of the Royal Commissionof Ancient and Historical Monumentsof Scotland (RCAHMS), they were appalled. Says Atreyee, “The original design had a gorgeous crown, but that ornamental rooftop was destroyed to makeroom for a new floor in 1987.” The floor isnow a dharmasala and the whole structure has been painted a deep red. Mullick Ghat, built in memory of thefamous banker and mint man Nimaicharan Mullick, is now the epicentre ofthe flower market. Rajya Sabha MP, said in the documentary, “It’s not impossible to bring back the glory of some of these ghats and their architectural masterpieces of cast iron. There are a lot of conservation architects in Calcutta who do good work. We can make a pool of such architects who will decide what is to be done, how it is to be done.” Talking about the challenges of restoration, Sircar tells me that the process has to begin with synergy between the agencies the Port Trust, KMDA and KMC involved in the management of the river and the riverfront. The Port Trust is a central government body, while the other two agencies come under the state government. “The users of the ghat, especially the flower merchants, must also co-operate during a restoration effort,” Sircar adds. The documentary features Gautam Chakraborti, who is honorary heritage advisor of the Port Trust. He tells me about strong hindrances in any kind of restoration effort of the ghats from various local political lobbies. He recalls the time of the refurbishing and painting of Mutty Lal Seal Ghat. He adds, “Some local goons desecrated the painted walls with excreta to prevent our work. We .
