To keep doing this job [draw political cartoons] week after week, I think you have to want to change the world, while understanding that you can't. You have to hold both of those contradictory ideas simultaneously. - Tom Tomorrow* Five policemen of the Gestapo have trained their guns on a dove flying overhead. It carries an olive branch in its beak and has the words ‘Nobel Peace Prize’ on its body. There’s one more person looking at the bird. It is a particularly frail-looking Mahatma Gandhi, feeding bird seeds from a box to a cow. The caption in English, perhaps translated from the original Bengali text at the bottom, states that the ceremony for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1939 has been “postponed until the month of December of the forthcoming year”. 1939 is the third time out of the five years (1937, 1938, 1939, 1947, and 1948) that Gandhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. It was the same year when he wrote a letter to Adolf Hitler stating, “Will you listen to the appeal of one who has deliberately shunned the method of war not without considerable success?” after World War II appeared imminent. the news media. Unlike back in those days, when all these artists in the show did excellent paintings and sculptures, and at the same time could raise their voice in the media through these cartoons.” Apart from this project, Das has an upcoming solo sometime in September-October and a book on FN Souza’s drawings in the Dhoomimal Gallery collection of Mohit Jain. “As there’s exhaustive coverage on Souza, I am only looking at what other artists think about him and hold conversations with them. I have already spoken to Amitava Das, and next to Manu Parekh,” says Das, who just conceptualised and edited Shades and Shine of Kartick Chandra Pyne, a coffee-table book by Dhoomimal Art Centre. *Tom Tomorrow is the pen name of editorial cartoonist Dan Perkins. You have written several essays and book chapters on comic arts, and you are also a cartoonist with several local and international exhibitions. Does being a cartoonist and a scholar of comic art rub off on each other? That’s a very important question. I started as an artist before getting engaged in the theoretical aspect of art – art history and criticism. Being a scholar-artist has helped me understand the creative aspect of artistic production in my writing about art. I engage on a different theoretical level when it comes to analysis because it is not what I assume but what I live as an artist. The knowledge of art history and its theory also contributes immensely to the way I employ imageries in my works. My recent cartoons have been grossly historical and experimental owing to the scholarly knowledge of what could and cartoon painting

decipher by the public. I see cartoons as a means of taking an artistic obligation to correct my society’s ills. My scholarly works on cartooning also foreground the medium as a democratic art form, handy in interrogating socio-political issues and serving as visual historical texts.

But the relief has been shortlived. Studies have shown how several endangered species are struggling to stay alive, getting affected by the waste we throw out. The mix of toxic chemicals and other materials are being ingested by animals frequently. A recent study recorded a total of 32 species of birds and animals feasting on garbage dumps in and around India. Read: What is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch The worst element in the waste we throw out is plastic (keep those masks and gloves off landfills, please!). When chemicals keep leeching into land and water, it pollutes our surroundings and the environment. Ingestion of plastic waste leads to ulceration in stomach, starvation and cartoon cat

of banner art and painting, which they wanted to tap into. “The mural shows two different expressions of Thambi: we made Thambi a South Indian superstar, as seen in his posture and style. While the other one shows him welcoming people to his city. And the city’s iconic elements are painted as chess boards,” he adds.

Chennai-based K Vishwa; M Bharath, A James and K Dhanavel from Puducherry; and A Aravind from Villupuram, all part of the Dravida Chezhiyan Karaikal are the artists behind the wall. This is the first time the collective has undertaken a facade of this scale. Explaining the process, Vishwa, the son of renowned banner artist NN Kumar, says, “Initially, we thought of doing a projection but that did not work out on the wall. Then, we put grafts and divided the wall in sections to paint them. It took us five days and nights to finish the walls.” The narrative of the mural is a hearty, rather stylish welcome and a warm send-off, all rolled into one. Looks like we will not be missing Thambi for at least a few years.
