There’s a tendency among the highly tech-literate (you know, us nerds) to approach new features with a jaded, seen-it-all-before sentiment. That’s especially true when Apple announces new iPhone features with lots of fanfare and self-congratulation. The Android faithful will then point out that this groundbreaking achievement existed on a Nexus phone seven years ago, and the first three versions of it sucked, but it’s great now. That attitude could certainly be applied to one of the centerpieces of iOS 16: new lock screens. On a high level, logo caterpillar

his logic analyzer to try and figure out how it worked. It turned out to be a simple SPI setup, and with a bit of trial and error he was able to extract the images that the watch was sending out.
To replace the broken screen, [Pierre] turned to some 128×64 pixel VFD displays that he had left over from an earlier project. Their resolution was exactly the same as the Garmin’s original OLED display, but their interface wasn’t: the VFDs expected 115k2 serial data. Programming a PIC microcontroller with an SPI port on one side and a UART port on the other made for a simple bridge between the two.
[Pierre] then designed and 3D printed a case reminiscent of a 1970s TV, with matching bright orange color. The end result is a funky little retro clock that shows notifications on a vintage green display. If you like desktop notifiers, we seen several neat ones alerting their owners about things ranging from new YouTube subscribers to the ISS passing by.

a detail that makes an otherwise solid but fairly straight wordmark into something memorable and clever. 31: Te Papa, 1998 This identity by ad firm Saatchi and Saatchi was a controversial one at the time – widely bagged as being way too expensive and irrelevant when it was first announced. But as a conceptual logo it was ahead of it’s time. These days I think we have a better understanding that a museum isn’t just about collecting old stuff, it’s about figuring out who we are. A logo doesn’t have to be literal. A milestone of NZ design, imho. 30: NZ Film Commission Sober and sensible. This feels high-end and highbrow, evoking quality, consideration and an appropriately formal stamp of authority for a cultural institution. Solid and smart. 29: Ripples, late 80s/early 90s There are many good ones that come and go (what’s up Fruju), but most chip brands, biscuits, lollies, ice blocks and so on change their look too often. I guess they’re always trying to stay fresh and feel new, but the trade-off is they never build up that long term trust from holding on to a strong identity. This is a proper chip logo. TV2 logos between 1989 and 1995.
Their coolest logo though might be one they never used: a while ago Tana Mitchell from Studio Akin showed me these beautiful old proposed designs by the great Samoan/NZ typographer Joseph Churchward. Imagine a world where TV2 had this much flair. 12: Tip Top So nice. The elegant flow of the lettering and the crisp clean primary colours against white feels sunny and sweet. The vibe is certainly retro, but manages to feel timeless rather than dated. A very feel good identity. 11: 10th Commonwealth Games, Christchurch, 1974 Louise Kellerman from Design Assembly suggested this one, a clever trickster with multiple layers packed into a seemingly simple geometric pattern. It was designed by Colin Simon in 1973, who started playing with a stylised 7 and 4, and landed here. It’s NZ, it’s 74, it suggests Union Jack for the Commonwealth, and it’s an X for the 10th games. At the time everyone loved it, and they sold a lot of merch.

of their throats as they tend to have larger airways. When we relax, our tongue falls back and fills this space, but the bigger the gap, the more likely it is you will snore. “Moreover, males tend to have a higher proportion of fat around the neck, in soft palate and the upper part of the tongue, whereas women tend to have greater fat deposition in the lower part of the airway. This is likely dictated by the levels of testosterone. Studies showed that females with overproduction of male hormones are four times more likely to snore.” Oestrogen and progesterone also provide protection against snoring and sleep apnoea. Male hormones not so much. So, to review: men are more likely to snore than women because of their fatter necks and bigger holes at the back of their throats in which their tongues nocturnally loll with potentially disruptive effects for bed partners. Unless I’ve misconstrued the data, heterosexual prenuptial agreements should therefore include clauses about optimal neck fatness in men.

odds of having sleep apnoea. My beard, more like George Michael stubble than Darwin’s, was not grown to hide these shortcomings. The findings of this questionnaire? I don’t have nasal abnormalities, I don’t grind my teeth and I sometimes sleep with my mouth slightly open. I should lose a little weight. Plus, finally, a diagnosis. “Your snoring is most likely caused by a vibration at the base of the tongue and mouth breathing during sleep.” The solution? Purchasing a Tomed SomnoGuard 3 for £47.99. “This new version of the simple one-piece boil and bite Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) … ” goes the blurb. What now? And yet I bought one, put it in boiled water like a sachet of cod and parsley sauce from the 1970s, then placed it in my mouth, like a boxer before the bell rings. Then I moved my lower jaw 5mm forwards as instructed, bit down hard and pressed the plastic firmly against my teeth to create a custom-moulded fit. The aim? To move the jaw forward to open up partially closed airways and stop me snoring. The result? In the mirror, I looked more neanderthal than ever. Oh yes, and I still snore. By.
