Conservationists often have to educate the public about how to identify invasive species like the spotted lanternfly and Asian carp. But the Polish Academy of Sciences just added another animal to its list of invasive alien species, and it might be in the same room with you right now: the domestic cat.  To be designated an “invasive alien species,” cats needed to meet two criteria: They had to be non-native, and they had to “cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health.” Cats actually meet both of these criteria, and not just in Poland. Here in the United States, too, felines can have a huge effect on the environment, and not in a good way.  To claim that cats are not invasive is a sign of myopic love for cats and ignorance of the many species they harm. This designation of the Polish Academy of Sciences is meant mostly for educational purposes and to inform policymaking. It in no way means that people in Poland can’t have pet cats, but it is an important step in growing awareness about the significant ecological harm cats can cause.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture doesn’t name cats in its partial listing will a cat eat a dead cat

are just the right size and not all of them are mice. In Poland, cats eat an estimated 136 million birds every year, a number that researchers called “alarming,” as the number of birds in farming areas decreased by 20% between 2000 and 2018. In the U.S., cats kill an estimated 2.4 billion birds every year, more than double the number of birds killed by cars, windows, wind turbines, power lines and communication towers combined. And this is all on top of the estimated 478 million reptiles, 173 million amphibians and 12.3 billion mammals that cats in the U.S. kill every year. Some of those mammals are undoubtedly mice. Many are not. An Australian study found that feral, or free-ranging unowned cats, prey on 400 different species there, including 28 threatened and endangered species. A single cat and her offspring, brought to New Zealand’s remote Stephens Island in 1894, wiped the Stephens Island wren off the face of the earth. That’s just one of the more than 60 vertebrate extinctions around the world that domestic cats have played a hand in, making up a quarter of all modern reptile, bird and mammal extinctions. cats are better at making us think there are fewer rats than at actually eliminating them. An often-touted alternative is trap-neuter-return, in which feral cats are caught, sterilized and then released. But like using cats to hunt rats, it sounds a lot better than it actually is. Studies have shown the approach has very limited success. But even if it succeeds, it still leaves cats alive in the wild where they can continue to hunt native wildlife. At the very least, we should avoid feeding feral cats. Garbage should be secured to keep cats and rats (and, sometimes, bears) from hanging out for easy meals. And food shouldn’t be left out for them that’s only likely to increase the feral cat population long term. You also might just be attracting more cats and other animals like rats. So please keep your cats indoors, get them spayed or neutered, don’t abandon them and don’t feed feral cats (and rats). It’s far better for cats to paw at birds on the TV screen than claw at birds in real life. catferal or domesticatedcan impact on a local bat population. "Although not all cat attacks on pekapeka will result in its death, they will reduce the overall likelihood of survival for individual bats and populations. That's a real concern when our pekapeka are under significant threat. "Native bats can be found in towns, cities, farms, and forestsif cats are there too, then bats are at risk of being killed." Domestic cat owners who live in areas with bats and other native wildlife can make their pets more conservation friendly with a number of approaches outlined on this page of the DOC website. DOC has a legislated mandate to control feral cats on public conservation land and does so where native speciesincluding pekapekaare under threat. DOC supports responsible domestic cat management and undertakes advocacy work about domestic cats and the threat they pose to New Zealand's wildlife. More information: Kerry M. Are All Palms Safe for Cats? Technically, Wismer says, all true palms are safe for cats. But a group of palm lookalikes could wreak havoc. The cycad palm group (Cycas and Zamia species) are actually evergreens and are unrelated to cat-friendly palms. If eaten by cats, these plants can cause liver failure and even death. Cycad Palms The toxic cycad palm group has palm-like fronds that radiate outward from a single, slow-growing trunk. Unlike the cat palm, the cycad palms have stiff greeneries that "feel thick like cardboard," Wismer says. In comparison, the fronds of the cat palm are described as "fluffy." The palms within the cycad group go by a variety of common names including cycad, sago, cardboard, and fern palm. Story continues Signs and Symptoms of Cycad Palm Poisoning in Cats All parts of cycad palms are toxic to cats, as they're laced with cycasin, B-methylamino-l-alanine, and an unidentified neurotoxin. Eating just one or two seeds can be fatal. According to the ASPCA, signs of poisoning from a palm in the cycad group include: Vomiting, sometimes bloody Dark stool Jaundice (yellowing of the lips, eyes, and gums) Excessive thirst .

a plant they shouldn’t have than are dogs. “One of the reasons cats are more in danger is because they are true carnivores. They have fewer enzymes to break down toxins in their livers, as compared to dogs that are omnivores,” said veterinarian Tina Wismer, senior director of the Animal Poison Control Center for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “So [dogs] have a wider variety of enzymes in their livers to break down toxins.” Every pet owner needs to be cautious about what your pet could try eating when your are not watching. Despite your best efforts to keep plants and pets separate, cats and dogs can be curious about the plant on the mantle and mistake it for a toy or a snack (they are, after all, small agents of chaos). Here are some of the most toxic flowers and houseplants to watch out for if you’re a cat or dog owner:1. Lilies Tiger lilies are among the most toxic kind of lilies for cats. the bean because it can cause liver and kidney failure and death. “For castor bean, it’s not so much the flower that it has but the seed that it produces,” Wismer said. Signs of castor bean poisoning can include “loss of appetite, excessive thirst, weakness, colic, trembling, sweating, loss of coordination, difficulty breathing, progressive central nervous system depression and fever,” according to the ASPCA website. 3. As the Pet Poison Helpline’s website states, “Most ingestions by pets will only result in stomach upset, however, more severe signs, including heart rate and rhythm abnormalities as well as neurologic changes, can occur with large ingestions.” Unfortunately, pets don’t have to eat a lot of azaleas before it becomes a problem. “As little as ingestion of 0.2% of an animal’s body weight can result in poisoning,” the Pet Poison Helpline states. “The overall prognosis is fair with treatment.”  10. updated.Related...WELLINGTON, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's long-tailed bat is seen as a tasty snack by cats. New research confirms what has long been suspected - feral and domestic cats are repeatedly hunting and eating the country's native bats. Researchers report an observation where seven of these critically-endangered bats, or pekapeka-tou-roa in Maori, were killed or injured by cats in a rural landscape over two years. Bats are the only land mammal native to New Zealand. According to a research paper published in the New Zealand Journal of Zoology on Wednesday, there is little data available about confirmed attacks in New Zealand, but in Britain, cats are thought to kill as many as 250,000 bats annually, so the researchers suggest the full impact in New Zealand is "substantial." Department of Conservation (DOC) Science Advisor Kerry Borkin examined the gut contents of a feral cat trapped in the North Island's Pureora Forest Park and found the remains of a lesser short-tailed bat. She also recorded the reoccurring hunting of long-tailed bats by a pet cat owned by a nearby household living on a rural property, who discovered pekapeka remains around their home. "The two cases we report on are just the.
