COLUMN: The Postie Notes by Pete Malone At this time of the year lambs have lost their skittishness and are almost predictable. Although, there are still a few with such a close attachment to their ewes that you might think they still harboured a death wish as they run across the road in front of the van. Another sharp braking manoeuvre, another red light on the driving tracking device and another black mark in the record book. The stags are still fairly common as well. Pete Malone. At Badanloch, they are quite unconcerned by the sight of the van stopping to admire their velvet covered antlers, but scatter when a camera is brought into view. I have also been seeing a lot of young rabbits these last few weeks. Birds of prey seem more prolific as well with buzzards often found siting on roadside posts or fence poles although they also won’t sit long enough to be captured digitally. Eagles can be seen in the distance and I have heard that white tailed sea eagles have been spotted foraging in the Armadale area. to understand what types of “predators” there are, and what we mean by “apex”. Different types of predators Contrary to popular belief, predators aren’t just species with large sharp teeth or fangs, hooked beaks, or razor-sharp claws. A “predator” is any species that eats part of, or all of, another living species – or in some cases its own species (which is called “cannibalism”). Predators can be: Carnivores These animals eat the flesh of other animals. Cannibalism is a special form of carnivory, and is widespread across the animal world. It has been recorded in several hundred species, including spiders, insects, fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals (including humans). Herbivores These are animals that eat plants, but they’re still considered predators. So yes, kangaroos are predators too, but they simply eat plants rather than animals. Although it appears this wasn’t always the case in Australia – beware Balbaroo fangaroo! Parasites These are animals or other organisms that live on (ectoparasites) or in (endoparasites) another species. They feed on this “host” for nutrients. Ticks, leeches and hookworms are all examples of parasites. Parasitoids These are organisms whose young develop on or inside another host organism, feed on it, and end up do eagles hunt at night or day

Then he hauled in a 104-pound humpback blue catfish Sunday morning on July 31. Tuesday, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks announced the catfish was a state record beating the previous record held by Freddie Parker and Brad Smith in 1997 by three pounds. “I knew it the day I caught it that it would be close. I brought it home and I had called the game wardens on the way home. It took us a while to find a certified scale. We managed to get Dave’s Meat Market to open so we could weigh it,” Halley said. “The game wardens never told me for certain if it was a record. I was proud of the fish either way. I have eaten some of it and it was good eating. My kids have ate a pile of it.” Halley said that Sunday his trotlines did not yield many catfish. The weather was not cooperating, as storms drove rain in sheets from the skies. “Most people wouldn’t stay out there. It gets bald eagles eating pets

PHOTO PROVIDED I have no idea why these adorable fluff balls have not been adopted yet. They have been at the shelter for 5 months now. When they came in, they were flea-bitten scrawny waifs. It’s amazing what a few weeks of medicine and a healthy diet will do. I call them the twins, because unless they are in the same room, I have trouble figuring out who is who. Thelma is slightly larger and Louise is a bit fluffier. Both girls love to play. You can usually find them chasing a ball or pulling a string down our hallway. They can also be talkative when they want you to play or pet them. Personality wise, Louise will instantly be your cuddly best friend while Thelma is a little leery of strangers. the ones already declining.” The Great Lakes region has an estimated 65 to 70 pairs of sandy-backed, ring-necked piping plovers, which skitter along beaches nibbling tiny marine animals and eggs. They’re among three remaining North American populations, their decline caused primarily by habitat loss and predation. Meanwhile, merlin numbers in the region have jumped. In the last 10 to 15 years, they’re suspected of killing at least 57 adult plovers, Cooper said. Though officials have shot some merlins, they’re looking for nonlethal controls. Data from the transmitter backpacks might help determine whether capturing and relocating them are worth trying, said Vince Cavalieri, a biologist with the national lakeshore.Eagles threaten rare birds Recovery of America’s national bird, the bald eagle, is a triumph. But in one area of coastal Maine, the big raptor poses a problem for the only U.S. breeding population of great cormorants. “When they’re disturbed by eagles, the adult cormorants will flush and leave their nests,” said Don Lyons, a conservation scientist at the National Audubon Society’s Seabird Institute. Then gulls, ravens and crows swoop in to gobble cormorant eggs and chicks. “If this happens repeatedly, an entire colony can fail,” Lyons said. His team organizes volunteers to.

at work Conflicts between recovering species and ones still in trouble don’t always mean something is wrong, scientists say. It could reflect a return to how things were before humans got in the way. “When a population gets back to where it’s having the same interactions with other organisms as before it went down, that’s nature at work,” said John Fitzpatrick, emeritus director of Cornell University’s Laboratory of Ornithology. The bald eagle is “challenging our preconceived notions about what’s normal” for prey such as great cormorants in New England and common murres on the West Coast, which might have been less abundant before eagles declined, said Lyons of the Audubon Society. The eagle’s recovery “complicates the conservation of certain other species,” Lyons said. “But their recovery is such a wonderful outcome ... that’s a welcome complication.” Predator-prey relationships are complex and intervening can be tricky, said Stein of the wildlife federation. It’s often wiser, he said, to focus on protecting habitat and reconnecting fragmented landscapes to promote natural migration than “moving things around willy-nilly.” But environmental scientist Ian Warkentin, a merlin specialist, said there can be ways to help struggling species without being heavy-handed.
